Imports Endanger Australian Pineapple Industry

“Continuing to demonstrate it’s lack of interest in protecting Australian small Businesses, our Australian Primary industry producers and in protecting Australia from pest and disease risks, the Federal Government’s lack of action has allowed a new assault from another multinational food company with Philippine pineapples. Australias leading fresh pineapple producers claim imported pineapples offered for sale at the Sydney and Melbourne Markets this week put the future of Australias thriving industry at risk. This week agents at the Melbourne and Sydney Markets commenced selling Dole pineapples from the Philippines in an apparently coordinated approach to establishing a market in Australia. Dole is one of the worlds largest food companies. Producers representing over 95 per cent of the Australian supply of premium fresh pineapples note that Australian-grown pineapples consistently exceeds consumer expectations for freshness, quality and availability, without risking Australias bio security. Australian pineapple producers had spent many years and many millions in developing superior varieties of great eating pineapples.”
